Impression Management:-

The process of influencing the thinking of other people about certain individual, object and events by spreading, limiting, optimizing information in social discussion is known as impression management. It is mostly used in influencing customers to sell them product and services for maximizing revenue of company.

 This concept is mostly used in human social discussions. First, Erving Goffman had presented the concept of impression management. This concept is related to understanding human behavior.  It is consciously and subconsciously taken actions to influences other's thinking.

It is an attempt to manipulate way of looking us by others to make easier achievement of our goal. We try to show us confident, attractive, well spoken, well listeners, talent, capable, interesting and good characteristics to impress others.

 We try to make favorable our features to get wanted results of impression management.  Impression management can be enforced anywhere like office, school, college, movie, market, training, society, social media etc.

Impression management is similar to self presentation. First, concept of impression management was used in mutual consultation. Later it was also used in digital communication. It is useful in psychology, sociology, communication, organizational behavior, marketing and media field.

It is first step of impression management. In this stage, individual decides the image to be presented to others. It is presented in form of actions, behavior, looks, expressions, communication and other things which influence others to make attitudes about us.

2.Impression Stimulation:-

It is second step of impression management. This step involves finding the cause why we try to spread specific impression to others. It may be to get approval, acceptance, respect from others, certain objectives. It may be done to sales maximization, show self different from others and show self as a leader.

3.Impression Creation:-

It is third step of impression management. This step involves choosing the best actions, behaviors, expressions, looks, communication and other factors related strategies to form intended impression. It may include certain body moves, certain words, sound tone and expressions.

4.Impression Prediction:-

This is fourth step of impression management. It involves actively estimating the intended impression to others. This consist confident body posture, smiling, eye contact and engaging with others.

5.Impression Adaptation:-

It is fifth step of impression management. In this step, we should adjust our action or behavior if we feel impression we are trying to form is not working or not being perceived. It involves making certain changes in behavior and actions accordance with our intended results.

Impression management is continuous process. We should observe and adjust to be sure either we are forming intended impression or not and desired goal is being achieved or not.
